  • Hej Software Engineering Leader,

Inter IKEA Group connects IKEA franchisees with range development and suppliers and ensures alignment of the overall IKEA strategic direction. Every day, we strive to develop, produce, and sell products and services that are affordable and accessible to everyone.

This role is positioned in Retail Concept Operations, Engineering competence hub. You will start working in the Sales and Payment product area, reporting to the Competence Hub Development Manager.

In Retail Concept Operations, as part of Retail Concept, we protect, develop, and enable the IKEA Concept across markets and franchisees. We turn the "what" of the IKEA Concept into the "how" of everyday retail operations, making it easy to use, scale, and trust across the value chain.

We take pride in working in progressive ways of working, with empowered teams and strong digital competence. We focus on simple, practical solutions that strengthen both short- and long-term low cost, while supporting consistency and quality in how the IKEA Concept comes to life.

Together, we build ways of working where teams take ownership, collaborate closely, and continuously improve, so we can create meaningful value for IKEA, our franchisees, co-workers, and the many people.

This is where we build, run and continuously improve the digital products and platforms that power the IKEA franchise offer. We bring together software engineering, platform engineering and quality engineering competence to create optimal preconditions for the business and people who design, develop and manage IKEA's offer across a connected and optimised value chain — all to deliver growth and enable low cost. We are fully integrated into the development process, providing competence, tools, solutions, processes and ways of working across many different areas. We work in cross-functional, agile teams that value ownership, collaboration and continuous improvement, and we're never done exploring better tools, technologies and practices to build a stronger digital foundation for IKEA's digital products and business.

Our team is based in Malmö, Sweden. We believe that your presence with the team and working the majority of the time in the workplace is important.

    About the role

As a Software Engineering Leader, you’ll play an important part in the team and bring valuable IKEA knowledge into a new setting. In the coming years, we will continue to modernise some of our most critical enterprise platforms to keep pace with a fast-changing retail landscape. As we continue to evolve, your primary focus will be bringing technical depth, architectural clarity and hands-on craftsmanship to a product area that matters across all of IKEA.

You will lead engineering efforts across the full product lifecycle, from early solution design and architecture discussions to implementation, deployment, rollout, and continuous improvement. Together with product managers, designers, and engineers, you will drive technical excellence and ensure that our tools continue to deliver business value at scale.

This is a senior level (4) software engineering role, assigned to a technology domain or digital product area. Unlike a people manager, your primary accountability is technical: you govern architecture design for the product area, align engineering work across teams, own the technical roadmap, and act as the engineering conscience of the area. You will collaborate closely with the Technology Leader, Software Engineering Manager, Enterprise Architects, and Product Software Engineers — and act as a senior representative of technology both internally within IKEA and externally in the market. The impact of our work continues to resonate in homes and hearts across the world.

On a typical working day, you will:

    • Align engineering work across teams, identifying synergies and engineering best practices that can be reused across the product area.

    • Own tactical and operational engineering initiatives at product area level to improve the technical effectiveness of engineering work.

    • Collaborate with the Technology Leader, Software Engineering Manager, Enterprise Architects, and Product Software Engineers to ensure overall solutioning and implementation fits together across platform and products.

    • Design and refactor products within the product domain, aligning to enterprise guidelines to help modularise, scale, and integrate systems — meeting resiliency, performance, reusability, and architecture goals.

    • Provide business and technology landscape understanding to guide teams and enable efficient information flows across the product area.

    • Drive adoption of design patterns and cross-cutting platform usage to enable efficiency and avoid unnecessary duplication.

    • Contribute to and lead technology evolution and architecture roadmaps at product area level to improve system performance and reliability.

    • Decide and communicate engineering priorities, co-create and own the technical roadmap that increases delivery velocity and unlocks new engineering capabilities.

    • Act as an ambassador for engineering and security best practices across the digital product area and the broader organisation.

    • Own and deliver tech onboarding for new engineers across the product area, and evaluate existing engineering practices to recommend improvements.

    Qualification

What we’d like you to bring to the table

The role as a Software Engineering Leader in this team requires you to:

    • Hold formal qualifications in computer science or a related engineering field.

    • Bring at least 10 years of experience as a software engineer, with strong expertise in the assigned tech stack.

    • Govern digital product architecture, both for individual products and across a product area.

    • Be a good leader to both individual engineers as well as multiple engineering teams.

    • Demonstrate extensive knowledge of software engineering principles, practices, and industry-standard toolsets.

    • Apply deep expertise in the assigned technology domain and related platforms, products, and services.

    • Utilise architecture frameworks and concepts such as TOGAF or similar.

    • Have the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to a wide range of audiences, from engineers to senior stakeholders.

    • Lead development teams and engineering initiatives within App or web development

    • Be comfortable working across the full software development lifecycle, from solution design through deployment and support.

    • Utilise Github, CI/CD pipelines, testing, and release management practices.

    • Design and implement integrations using APIs, Azure services, and enterprise integration patterns.

It’s a plus if you also:

    • Represent technology externally in the market or at industry forums.

    • Have experience working effectively in large-scale, global product organisations.
