    IKEA is in an expansion phase - opening new stores, trying out new formats and reshaping our current assets to reach more of the many people. Our Expansion team builds the critical tools and systems that make this possible, supporting Retail Expansion and Real Estate teams as they bring IKEA to new communities around the world.

    Right now, we're at an exciting inflection point. We're taking ownership and building internal capability, moving from external teams to empowered internal team. This means you'll have the opportunity to truly shape how we work, what we build, and how we deliver value to our users.

    We have opportunities across two key areas:
    · Established systems: Working on tools that support the expansion process and insights management - modernizing, simplifying, and building better experiences for our users
    · Greenfield discovery: Joining us in the early exploration phase where we're still defining what to build - involving discovery work, stakeholder interviews, needs mapping, and software architecture design.

    Who you are

    You are an engineer who is ready to take ownership and thrive in an environment where we're building internal capability from the ground up. You're someone who can think independently, make decisions, and help establish the foundations for how we work.

    You're excited about technology and want to build digital products that have real impact -helping IKEA expand its physical presence across the world. You understand that great software isn't just about code; it's about understanding users, solving real problems, and delivering value.

    You relish the opportunity to contribute to both team metrics and product metrics. You'll be part of defining how and what we measure to define success from an engineering perspective. If you have a few years of experience building backend applications and are ready to take on more ownership and responsibility in a transformative environment – we want to hear from you!

    We're looking for full-stack engineers, but if you're stronger in backend, that's absolutely fine. We can teach you the frameworks and technologies - we're more interested in your ability to learn, adapt, and take ownership.

    In this role, you will design and build reliable interfaces that connect in-store automation systems with our core platforms, ensuring smooth and real-time data flow. You’ll work closely with hardware vendors, store operations teams, and other engineering teams to deliver secure, high-quality integrations that keep our stores running efficiently.

    About this work area

    Our team works cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, and Data. We expect all team members to contribute to good software design principles and keep each other accountable. We use these principles to guide us when exploring new solutions, bringing in new tools and frameworks, or creating entirely new systems.

    We work primarily on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and are actively modernizing our systems with Infrastructure as Code with Terraform. Most of our systems are only a few years old, giving us a modern foundation to build upon.

    For the frontend we use React with JS, we have our own design system, you probably already know it from www.ikea.com, which is the better example. We do have also a version of it for our coworkers, so internal tools also benefit from having a proper design.

    For the backend we mostly use Node JS, with containers on GCP deploying serverless. It allows us to keep same language for frontend and backend which makes easier to engineers work on both sides of the apps. We use lot of fun stuff, with CDNs tech like Edge Computing and distributed caching, but also good old databases, with NoSQL and SQL approaches, event driving architecture, REST, and many other web technologies that we align in our Engineering baseline. We don’t expect you to know them all, just exposing all cool things you will be able to work with. You will also have access to latest AI models and tools to help you; we are fully onboard with AI but taking a human-centric approach.
