  • We are looking for a senior, hands-on Technical System Engineer to design and build the cloud, data and IoT foundation for our real estate portfolio. You will connect smart building systems, IoT devices and business systems into a scalable data platform that powers insights on energy, occupancy, maintenance and building performance.

This is a technical role for someone who has delivered large projects end to end, combines a cloud architecture background with full-stack / back-end development, and is strong in data engineering with Databricks and Python.

As a Senior Systems Engineer in the Group Real Estate, you will be at the heart of a foundational transformation in IWMS.

    This means that you will:
    • Cloud architecture: Design and implement secure, scalable cloud architectures for real estate and smart building solutions on GCP, Azure or AWS.
    • Data platform: Build and operate the data lake / lakehouse (e.g. Databricks, Delta Lake) for building, IoT, IWMS and business data, including ingestion, modelling and governance.
    • Data pipelines: Develop batch and streaming pipelines in Python / PySpark and SQL for time-series sensor data, BMS data and system integrations.
    • IoT & smart buildings: Architect and integrate IoT device connectivity and smart building systems (BMS, energy meters, occupancy and environmental sensors) using protocols such as MQTT, BACnet and OPC UA.
    • Back-end & full-stack development: Build APIs, microservices and, where needed, web front-ends that expose building data and insights to users and other systems (including the IWMS / Planon).
    • Large projects: Lead the technical workstream on large, multi-site projects – from solution design and estimation through build, rollout and handover to operations.
    • DevOps & quality: Set up CI/CD, infrastructure as code, monitoring and automated testing; ensure security, reliability and cost efficiency.
    • Analytics & AI enablement: Enable dashboards, KPIs and advanced analytics/ML use cases such as energy optimisation, predictive maintenance and space utilisation.
    • Technical leadership: Define standards, review code and designs, mentor engineers and work closely with architects, vendors and business stakeholders.

    We believe you bring:
    • 7+ years (recommended) in software, cloud and data engineering, including large-scale projects
    • Data platform – Expert level: Databricks, Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, data lake / lakehouse architecture
    • Programming - Expert level: Python, PySpark, SQL; plus a back-end language such as Java, Go or Node.js
    • Back-end / full-stack - Advanced: REST / GraphQL APIs, microservices, event-driven architecture; React / Angular / Vue
    • Data engineering - Advanced: Batch & streaming pipelines, Kafka / Pub/Sub, time-series data, data modelling, data quality
    • IoT & smart buildings - Advanced: MQTT, IoT gateways, edge computing, BMS integration (BACnet, Modbus, OPC UA), digital twin concepts
    • DevOps - Advanced: CI/CD (GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, GitLab), Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform
    • Security & governance - Advanced: IAM, network security, secrets management, data governance, GDPR
    This is our wish list!

The must-haves we see for this role are:
    • Senior, hands-on experience in software and data engineering, with a track record of delivering large, complex projects.
    • Cloud architecture: Strong background in cloud architecture on GCP and/or Azure / AWS (compute, storage, networking, security, serverless, managed data services).
    • Software engineering: Full-stack experience with a strong back-end focus – designing and building APIs, services and integrations.
    • Python: Advanced Python skills for data engineering and back-end development.
    • Databricks: Hands-on experience with Databricks (PySpark, Delta Lake, workflows, Unity Catalog).
    • Data background: Solid data engineering experience – data lakes / lakehouses, data modelling, ETL/ELT, streaming and time-series data.
    • IoT & smart buildings: Experience with IoT platforms and smart building systems, including device data ingestion and building protocols.
    • DevOps: Experience with CI/CD, Git, containers (Docker / Kubernetes) and infrastructure as code (e.g. Terraform).

    Nice to have:
    • Real estate / retail: Experience in real estate, facility management or retail environments with many sites.
    • Experience integrating with IWMS / CAFM systems such as Planon.
    • Digital twin or BIM-based platforms.
    • Machine learning / MLOps (MLflow) for energy optimisation and predictive maintenance.
    • Energy management, ESG and sustainability reporting.
    • BI tools such as Power BI, Looker or Tableau.

    Personal Competencies:
    • Hands-on technical leader who still writes code and builds solutions.
    • Strong architectural thinking, balancing long-term design with pragmatic delivery.
    • Clear communicator who can explain complex technology to business stakeholders.
    • Drives large initiatives with ownership, structure and focus on outcomes.
    • Curious and forward-looking mindset, with a willingness to explore and learn new technologies, identify their potential, and uncover business value through AI including opportunities to develop and work with agentic AI solutions
    • Mentors and raises the technical level of the team.
    • Fluent in English, written and spoken.

    Education and certifications:
    • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science or equivalent experience.
    • Cloud certifications such as Google Professional Cloud Architect, Azure Solutions Architect Expert or AWS Solutions Architect – Professional are a plus.
    • Databricks certifications (e.g. Data Engineer Professional) are a plus.
