Company description

We are now looking for one student that wants to write their Master thesis at IKEA Range & Supply from January to June 2025.

IKEA has committed to achieving Net Zero and Beyond by halving the absolute value chain’s GHG emissions by 2030 (compared to FY16 baseline) and reaching net zero emissions by FY50 at the latest without relying on carbon offsets. At the same time, IKEA is making great efforts to transition towards a circular business and working to regenerate resources, protect ecosystems, and improve biodiversity.

The forest, land and agriculture (FLAG) sector represents nearly a quarter of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions - the largest emitting sector after energy. IKEA is one of the main bio-based materials consumers, with wood being the most important commodity. The company is willing to take further responsibility and for reaching its commitments seeks to account for and improve the contribution of land-related GHG emissions and removals. For this purpose, we need to gain a better understanding of what will be the evolution of IKEAs land carbon footprint associated with wood ending in its value chain.

We invite you to explore with us the future evolution of the biogenic removal potential in the forests where the wood commodity is coming from and develop alternative scenarios. The results of this work will contribute to IKEA’s forestry and agricultural land carbon monitoring and serve as the basis for other assessments relating to biodiversity & ecosystem services.

Job description

We are looking for a master thesis student to work on the development of an Excel tool that enables IKEA to evaluate the evolution of the biogenic removal potential for the company’s most relevant wood-based materials and sourcing countries/regions, as well as the suggestion and evaluation of alternative scenarios.

IKEA is seeking one Master thesis student to answer the following research questions:

  • Based on growing stock inventory data from public data sources and databases, and overlaying with future wood supply availability, what is the evolution of aboveground net biogenic land-related emissions/removals associated with IKEAs wood sourcing expected until 2050?

  • What land management activities could increase the land-based removals and include them in the tool’s scenario analysis?

The deliverables are:

  • Literature review on what land management activities could increase the land-based removals and include them in the tool’s scenario analysis.Analysis of the evolution of aboveground net biogenic land-related emissions/removals associated with IKEAs wood sourcing expected until 2050, in alignment with its sourcing strategy and wood material direction.

  • Excel tool that allows for different inputs and scenario analysis (with parameters as e.g. countries/regions, wood consumption, shift to recycled material, etc.).

Qualification

Our candidate student should have:

  • A background in forestry, ecosystem science or environmental sciences

  • A passion for sustainability and climate-related topics

  • Strong skills in quantitative analysis and enjoy working with large databases and spatial data.

  •  Great Excel skills

  • GIS knowledge and experience with IPCC LULUCF, GHG Protocol reporting, or previous work with forestry-related topics are an advantage.

  • Enjoy working in an international and multi-disciplinary team

  • English fluency.
