    Job description

    As a Software Engineering Specialist in Digital Automation, you will combine deep technical expertise with hands-on software engineering to enable the successful delivery of automation capabilities across the IKEA value chain. You will act as a recognised specialist within your area of expertise while remaining actively involved in the design, development, deployment and operation of digital solutions.

    The Software Engineering Specialist role builds upon the Software Engineer role by providing deeper expertise within a specialised discipline and supporting engineering excellence across teams, products and technology domains. You will contribute both vertically within your assigned product area and horizontally through collaboration, coaching and knowledge sharing across the broader engineering community.

    Within Digital Automation, your specialisation may include areas such as DevOps engineering, cloud engineering, data and integration engineering, API development, Requirement solicitation, security engineering, knowledge engineering, intelligent automation or other specialised technical domains. You will apply your expertise to solve complex technical challenges, improve engineering practices and help shape the evolution of our automation capabilities.

    More specifically, in this role you will (be):

    • Act as a recognised technical specialist within a defined software engineering discipline, driving best practices and providing expert guidance.
    • Design, develop, test, deploy and maintain software solutions that enable business outcomes and deliver value to users.
    • Apply and promote modern software engineering practices, including continuous integration, continuous delivery, automation and quality engineering.
    • Take ownership of complex technical challenges and provide specialist expertise to support delivery teams.
    • Contribute to architecture discussions and provide specialist input to solution designs and technical decision making.
    • Explore and evaluate emerging technologies, industry trends and engineering practices that may benefit Digital Automation products and platforms.
    • Create prototypes, proofs of concept, data models, integrations, configurations or other technical artefacts needed to validate new ideas and technologies.
    • Support and coach engineers within your area of expertise through mentoring, knowledge sharing and technical guidance.

    To be successful in this role, we expect you to have:

    Experience & Qualifications

    • Formal qualifications in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or an equivalent engineering discipline.
    • Formal qualifications within a recognised specialist discipline, or demonstrated expert-level experience within that area.
    • A minimum of five years' professional experience as a Software Engineer.
    • At least three years of experience within a defined specialist area such as cloud engineering, integration engineering, API development or a similar discipline.
    • Experience designing, developing, deploying and supporting enterprise-grade software solutions.
    • Experience influencing technical decisions and driving adoption of engineering standards and good practices.
    • Experience working within large and complex organisations is considered an advantage.

    Knowledge & Motivation:

    • Expert knowledge within a defined specialist software engineering discipline.
    • Strong knowledge of software engineering principles, methodologies and industry-leading practices.
    • Good understanding of software architecture, design patterns and engineering quality attributes.
    • Broad technical understanding across multiple technology domains and how they interact within a larger ecosystem.
    • Passion for technology, innovation and continuous learning.
    • Motivation to stay at the forefront of emerging tools, technologies and engineering practices.
    • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
    • Curiosity and confidence to navigate uncertainty, challenge existing approaches and explore new possibilities.
