Your new job 

You are a Software Engineer or 3D Developer who enjoys working across cloud services, developer tooling, backend systems, and 3D pipelines. You turn complex 3D challenges into scalable, reliable platform capabilities. 

We’re looking for a 3D Platform Engineer to build the shared capabilities behind IKEA’s next generation of 3D digital planning and product experiences. You will transform complex CAD and PLM product data into reliable, scalable 3D assets and services—covering tessellation, mesh optimization, LOD generation, and preservation of visual and geometric fidelity. Your work will make high-quality 3D product data easier to use across customer-facing planning solutions, content production, and product development. On a typical week, you will: 

• Design, build, test, operate, and lifecycle-manage reusable 3D platform services and applications using JavaScript, TypeScript, C#, C++, and Python. 

• Translate business and user needs into clear technical designs, working software, and well-defined development briefs. 

• Evaluate architectures, tools, and workflows to improve platform security, performance, availability, reliability, maintainability, and developer experience. 

• Collaborate in agile and DevOps teams across product and engineering areas to integrate shared 3D capabilities into planning, content, and product-development workflows, with clear communication and shared delivery commitments. 

• Provide technical direction for core 3D solutions, guide consumers in using platform capabilities and good practices, and collaborate effectively with internal teams, technology partners, and suppliers. 

• Build automated CAD-to-mesh pipelines that preserve product structure, metadata, geometry, materials, and instancing from PLM and CAD sources. 

• Develop and validate mesh-processing workflows for repair, tessellation, simplification, LOD generation, and delivery of high-fidelity and optimized asset variants. 

• Benchmark and integrate commercial and open-source technologies, building integration layers around CAD and geometry SDKs that enable scalable cloud-based 3D processing services. 

What we’d like you to bring to the table 

As a 3D Platform Engineer, you combine strong software engineering with practical knowledge of 3D data, pipelines, and runtime needs. You can work across the full flow—from CAD and PLM sources to optimized assets and scalable services. You should also bring: 

• A strong understanding of computer graphics, real-time and offline rendering, and production-ready 3D asset pipelines. 

• Hands-on experience developing software products for 3D, computer graphics, or VFX workflows. 

• Knowledge of product-development workflows from CAD tools such as Revit, SolidWorks, or CATIA through digital content creation, visualization, and rendering. 

• Understanding of asset creation, materials, texturing, lighting, rigging, and scene composition; experience with OpenUSD, MaterialX, or glTF is a plus. 

• A platform and DevOps mindset, with experience building, operating, and improving business-critical services in an agile environment. 

• A degree in computer science, media technology, digital media, or a related field—or equivalent practical experience. 

• Strong C++ skills, including native SDK integration, performance profiling, debugging, and maintainable adapters for third-party libraries. 

• Practical knowledge of CAD data, assembly structures, exact geometry, tessellation, and conversion to polygonal meshes in a PLM or PDM context. 

• Experience with mesh repair, topology, normals, tangents, UVs, materials, instancing, simplification, and automated LOD generation—balancing fidelity with file size, processing time, memory, and rendering performance. 

Our technology landscape includes Azure, Terraform, Docker, OpenAPI, Three.js, React, JavaScript, TypeScript, C++, Python, MongoDB, Neo4j, PLM platforms, CAD and geometry SDKs, and mesh-processing libraries. You do not need to know them all- curiosity and a willingness to learn matter just as much. 

It’s a plus if you also bring: 

• Experience with enterprise PLM or PDM platforms, CAD translation, or geometry SDKs. 

• Experience with mesh-processing or optimization libraries and open 3D formats such as OpenUSD or glTF.
