Job Description

  • Job ID: 328186

  • Date posted: 30/01/2026

  • How and which products can I best use to guide customers through the store? And how can I ensure that customers add items to their shopping carts or yellow bags at a certain point? These are the questions you will be dealing with as a visual merchandising activity employee at IKEA Amsterdam. While your colleagues work on designing and furnishing homes and room settings, you will be working at the product level. In this way, you too will make an indispensable contribution to a better home for everyone.

What you'll be doing day to day

You ensure that customers find their way around the store and are encouraged to make purchases. How do you do that? By clearly highlighting all the benefits of our versatile products. Does the customer already know that this wardrobe can also be used as a shoe cabinet? Or that the cover of this sofa can be changed for washing or to give the sofa a different color? Even if a product is not selling well, you will consult with the sales manager to come up with a plan to promote this product (more effectively). What else you will be doing:

    - making rounds before the store opens so you can restock products and organize back walls, for example.
    - determining where new products can best be placed and taking this into account during the design phase in Revit.
    - placing new products in the department according to IKEA standards.
    - Participate in meetings with your team manager and the entire department about upcoming projects, how everyone is doing, and any issues that need to be resolved.
    - Collaborate on larger projects and renovations involving the implementation of new seasonal products throughout the store.

    Our team within IKEA

Can you imagine? IKEA started out as a small mail order company in Älmhult, a Swedish village in the countryside. Today, you can find us in 63 countries with a unique product range. Working at IKEA means working in a world of ideas. A world that our own colleagues describe as a workplace where everyone is welcome and you can be yourself. Where together we make a difference for as many people and the planet as possible. But also a workplace where you determine your own career path and where there is plenty of room for your practical creativity and ideas. And all this while working in a great team with colleagues who are always there for you and help you when you need it.

You will work for the Communication & Interior Design department. This department is responsible for safeguarding the IKEA concept. You will play an important role in this. You will be part of a helpful team of around 25 people in which everyone is equal. Because that ultimate IKEA experience? You need the employees from visual merchandising, interior design, graphics, furniture assembly, and the handymen to work just as hard for it.

At IKEA, we believe it is important that you can be yourself. And that you fulfill this creative and entrepreneurial role in a way that suits you. You are good at planning and organizing and you work accurately. This helps you to keep your department in order. You are also practical and commercially minded. Do sales figures shoot up after you have made adjustments at product level? That makes you happy. You can also explain ideas and visual concepts in words, even to people who do not have a creative role. And if something does not go as planned, if IKEA's standards do not match reality this time, or if we miss out on sales opportunities, you come up with a suitable solution or alternative. What else you need:

    - You have a professional education (HBO) level of working and thinking. You have achieved this through creative training, preferably in the field of interior design, or through work experience.
    - You have at least 2 years of work experience as a VM or similar experience
    - You are enterprising (or someone who takes initiative), you can work both independently and in a team
    - You have knowledge of design software, such as Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp, or AutoCAD, so that you can quickly master Revit.
    - You speak and write English.

Good for the planet and good for you

What we do today, we will do even better tomorrow. Because together we care for people and the environment. And IKEA takes good care of you too. Start as a visual merchandising activity employee and receive, based on 36 hours per week:

    - From the age of 18, you will receive a gross monthly salary between € € 3.042 and € € 4.002,96 , depending on your knowledge and experience. This includes a 13th month's salary and 8% vacation pay. These are paid as standard in December and May, but you can also choose to receive them monthly.
    • A collective bonus scheme. This is determined annually and amounts to a maximum of 150% of your gross monthly salary.
    • Public transportation costs are reimbursed in full. Do you live within a radius of 5 to 20 km from the IKEA store? Then you can also opt for a lease bicycle. Do you travel by car? Then you will receive a travel allowance of up to €243 per month.
